They are still ..”Flying High” in Bergen Country, New Jersey !!!! The most northern county in New Jersey has produced some of the states finest High School Boys and Girls pole vaulters the last 20 years. The magic continues this spring…as Northern Valley-Old Tappan senior…TYLER HRBEK…soared to a New School and Country Record of 15′ 5″ on Friday at the Bergen County Championships for Coach Jeff Clark and staff. Tyler…who will attend UCONN next fall on scholarship had close bars at 15′ 7.5″ and was voted the Ed Church Award following the meet!! !!! Pushing Tyler all the way was Pascack Hills junior…Liam Landau… who also soared to a new school record at 15′ 1″ for the Indians coached by Ross Koehler and the silver vault medal!!!! Placing third was Adam Stavash(Hasbrouck Heights) 13′ 3″…Jared Forer(Glen Rock) 13′ 3″ Jona Kim(Old tappan) 13′ 3″ Sam Pitkowsky(PV) 12′ 9″ Justin Manne(Mahwah) 12′ 3″ for Coach Pasek.
The Bergen Vault Girls showed equal spirit and performance…with MELISSA PURCELL of the Pascack Valley Pole Vault Team…headed up by Coach Tim Wilson. Melissa sailed 12′ 3″ for her championship crown and gold medal.. Hot on vault runway was junior .. Sydney Woods(NV-Demarest) at 11′ 9″ and Senior..Nicole Lester(Ridgewood) at 11′ 9″PR for the bronze . Sophomore Marisa DiGia of Old Tappen hit a PR at 11′ 3″ for a 4th place..Samantha Cioppio(Glen Rock) 10′ 9″…Kyra Muller(Mahwah) 10′ 9″ .. Ariana Cavalli(Old Tappan) 10′ 9″.
The Bergen County Frosh Champs had Randi Conroy from Northern Highlands as the vault winner at 8′ 6’…Jordan Hecker(NV_Demarest) 8′ 6″ Mary Flahive(Holy Angels) 8′ 0″ Abigal Fowler(NV-Demarest) 7′ 0″.
The Orange Country Championships,NY … had 24 Circus Vaulters in action at Warwick Valley Central on Friday. All athletes battled strong head winds in both the Girls and Boys competition. KAELI THOMPSON(Warwick Valley,NY-Junior) pulled off the first Three-Peat Pole Vault winner ever, with her 12′ 0″ leap of faith… and big height at 12′ 6″ for the Purple Wave. She also placed third in Long Jump and 4×100 Relay!!! Congratulations to Vestal,NY -senior—Johannes Stromhaug… is back in his flying mode. Coming off a shortened indoor season…this Cornell University recruit blasted over 15′ 0″ on Thursday and had big height over 15′ 7″ for Coach Jim Cerra and the Golden Bears Vault Team!!!!!
District 2 Championships,Scranton,PA—- Great results again out of District 2 Circus Girls and Boys in 3A……with Pittston Area senior Abby Norwillo flying four events all day with her sister… Abby blasted 12′ 0″ for gold in the vault ,placed in long jump and 4 x 100 Relay for big team points. Abington Heights ..junior Dani Heine flew 11′ 6″ for her ticket to state meet next week and long jumped 17′ 1″ for the Comets!!! Dani McGrane of James Coughlin was the TOP SOPH in 3A..with her 8′ 6’..as did Rachel Klein(Abington Heights-Soph) at 8′ 6″ Megan O’Neill of Honesdale looked super over 8′ 0″!!
Dalton Yeust …just a Sophomore at Tunkhannock Central sizzled over 13′ 0″ for the gold medal at State berth.. Keep an eye on this strongman from Tunk!!! Trenton Zavada(Coughlin) 11′ 0″ TOP FROSH!!!!
The 2A Group was led by Vaulter hurdler Trina Barcarola of Western Wayne, This sophomore won her section at 11′ 7.5″ School Record and flew 15.84 in 100m Hurdles for Coach Bob Amos. Corah Krantz(Lakeland) moves to Stae with her 10′ 6′ and Sydney Bryla(Lakeland) 8′ 6″ for Coach Krantz!!
